SON, A PSYCHOPATH AND HIS VICTIMS

book review by K. O.

SON, A PSYCHOPATH AND HIS VICTIMS
by Jack Olsen

Thanks to Laura's study of the psychopath, as I read this book, I found many similarities between "son," a man named Fred Coe and what we have learned about psychopaths and their deceptions. As I read this book, while at the same time reading portions of "The Mask of Sanity," my interest in this subject matter has gone from "passing" to rising up with shouts "Knowledge Protects." I am now fully convinced that until the world learns how to "see" these types for what they are, humanity will continue to be to manipulated and deceived.

To get to the book: Fred Coe is a psychopath as the title suggests. His story takes place in blue collar Spokane Washington. Fred Coe's crime was rape: he perpetrated hundreds of them in the late 70's and early 80's (only a handful were brought to tial). However, Coe's victims were not just those he damaged by his brutal attacks, but in face, everyone with whom he came in contact.

The book presents interviews with those who knew him by which means Jack Olson gives us an inside look to what the people who interacted with Coe directly thought of the well dressed, well spoken pychopath. Fred Coe - in the typical manner of the psychopath - was very, very talented in devious tactics with which he was able to make people believe his lies - no matter how outrageous they were.

Fred Coe preyed on woman and men alike, getting them to give him money, jobs and even love. As a young man Fred Coe "forged" his report cards and plagiarized a speech by Herbert Hoover!

One of the strangest things about the pschopath is his ability to induce "attachment" despite the victim's awareness of his nature. One of his friends said he "lacked emotion" and that he was like a "space invader," yet this same individual stuck by Coe to the very end. One friend wondered he she had ever seen the real Fred Coe or if a real one existed.

Another interesting fact is that, like Ira Einhorn and some other psychopaths we have studied in the Quantum Future School, Coe thought he was "the next Hemmingway." And, just like Einhorn, Coe's manuscripts were repeatedly turned down by publishers.

Coe repeatedly wrote fake letters of reccommendation for himself, glibly creating fake businesses and stationary and people as a way of getting jobs. Coe also habitually said things that would embarrass people and not even realize he was doing this and admitted as much. He persuaded his wife to steal for him. Coe himself was caught stealing meat and pretended to be mortified. He spent weeks composing letters (on the false business letterhead) to people and even judges explaining his innocence even though he had been caught red handed! In the typical style of the psychopath, he blamed the victim, saying the store manager was "out to get him."

The book describes how Coe coached a girlfriend on effective lying, which tells us that Coe knew very well what he was doing. His advice included that she ought to add small, insignificant details into the lie because it was a sure way to get people to fall for it. This same girlfriend wondered why he didn't understand feelings yet he seemed to know so many things, most especially how to manipulate the feelings of others consciously.

Coe was the typical psychopath right down the line. He agreed to pay half the rent on an apartment with a girlfriend, but he would spend his share and when she protested, he would call her cheap and uncaring in regards to his financial situation.

I haven't even touched on Coe's mother who was also a psychopath. She is the one who called him "son when talking to other people. She didn't say "my son" but just "son." After "sons" arrest she hired hit men to kill the judge and police officer! She also was arrested, tried and convicted.

This book is a great read and provides many, many clues to the psychopaths in our reality.
